“Most people have no idea how good their body is designed to feel.”

Yoga

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, which means to yoke or unite, and the purpose is to unite the mind, body, and spirit, or soul. True yoga is so much more than just the physical practice. The foundation of yoga is the eightfold path known as the Eight Limbs of Yoga

Yamas

The ethical or moral observances

Ahimsa

Do no harm to ourselves or others

Satya

Tell the truth and live in alignment with our true self

Asteya

Avoid taking what isn’t ours and wanting what others have

Brahmacharya

Avoid greed and excess

Aparigraha

Enjoy life and don’t cling to what we don’t have or can’t change

Niyamas

Spiritual and self-discipline observances

Saucha

Have a clean body, clean thoughts, and clean words

Santosha

Be content

Tapas

Find the good in life’s challenges

Svadhyaya

There are many layers to get to the true core of who we are

Ishvara Pranidhana

Be an active participant in life, but accept you have a higher purpose

Asana

The physical postures of yoga

Pranayama

Breath exercises to move the life force through the body

Pratyahara

Withdrawal of the senses, or being aware of but not reacting to external stimuli

Dhyana

Meditation that spontaneously arises through concentration

Samadhi

Bliss, union with the divine, or experiencing life the way it is without emotions and preferences affecting how we perceive it

Yoga is all of this.

The goal is acceptance of life as it is without getting on the roller coaster of emotional up and downs. It doesn’t mean that we don’t care or that we don’t have compassion, ambition, or goals. It doesn’t mean that we don’t work hard. It means that we are in tune with our authentic selves and our happiness comes from within. The full practice of yoga is a way to learn who you are, challenge yourself, and grow.
