The Reiki Principles
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
Reiki
Reiki, which is pronounced ray-key, has a long history—thousands of years—but reiki as it is practiced in the US today was officially developed in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui (1865-1926) in 1922. In search of effective healing methods, he spent 21-days in meditation retreat on the holy mountain Kurama, and there he discovered the concept that would come to be called Reiki.
The word reiki comes from the Japanese words “rei” which means universal life, and “ki” meaning energy, so Universal Life/Love Energy. We don’t fully understand how it works, but one theory is that Reiki affects the energetic field that surrounds all living things. Einstein said, and now quantum physicists are showing, that at an atomic level everything in the universe is energy vibrating at different frequencies. The human body, with its energy centers (chakras) and field around it (aura), are also made up of energy and every person has a unique energy signature. Reiki may work by altering that energy or it may just help to put you in the right frame of mind to find peace and healing.
We may not completely understand how it works, but it is effective enough to be used in major medical centers in the United States as supplemental care in addition to standard treatments.
During a Reiki session, you will lie down or sit fully clothed. You will close your eyes if you are comfortable doing that and listen to soothing music or the sounds of nature. The practitioner will place their hands on or above different points on your body and may focus on specific areas if that is requested or noticed. A typical session lasts 30-45 minutes, and outcomes vary. Many people feel calm and relaxed. You may feel heat, tingling, or strong emotions. Some people experience involuntary body movements; their legs will jump, for example. Whatever happens is what your body needs at that time and is completely acceptable.
Sessions can be indoors or out in a private location. See our Events page for available appointment times or Contact Us to schedule a session.
